THEORETICAL OBSERVATORY
Variation on Schrödinger's Paradox 2001-2025
THE THOUGHT EXPERIMENT
The installation was born in 2001, following the analysis of Erwin Schrödinger's thought experiment. First study: 2002. Prototypes: 2008 and 2025. Plywood cube (250 cm height, 200 cm width, 130 cm depth), red velvet curtain, ladder, chairs. The curtain remains closed. A faint light filters from behind. Its source is invisible. No sound. That light declares: something inside lives. What it is cannot be known. And it cannot be known by design, not by chance. In 1935 Schrödinger posed a radical question: does reality exist independently of observation? Quantum mechanics said no. A particle, until observed, can exist in multiple places simultaneously. This is the coexistence of states: not a mystery to uncover, but all real possibilities in the same instant.
THE SCIENTIFIC DEBATE
To expose its absurd logic, Schrödinger devised an extreme case: a cat sealed in a box with a Geiger counter, a hammer, a vial of arsenic, and a radioactive atom. If the atom decays, the Geiger counter detects it, the hammer shatters the vial, and the arsenic kills the cat. But the atom, until measured, is both decayed and intact. Thus the counter is both triggered and silent, the hammer both raised and fallen, the cat both alive and dead, all together, until the box is opened. Here lies the common misunderstanding. Schrödinger rejected the idea that reality depends on observation. His was a critique: quantum theory denies a definite state before measurement, offering only probabilities. A cat cannot be both alive and dead merely because unobserved. Schrödinger: the cat has a real state regardless of observation. Bohr, Heisenberg, Born: before measurement, no definite reality exists. Only the act of observation creates it.
THE SUPREME POTENTIAL
The work rejects both camps. Schrödinger: coexistence is an error to correct, a theoretical illusion to overcome for a determinate reality. Bohr, Heisenberg, Born: a provisional stage inevitably destined for measurement collapse. The installation inverts the terms. Superposition ceases to be a problem or transition: it becomes the supreme principle of creation. Not a defect to heal, not a passive anteroom. It is the maximum expansion of the possible, where every variant, every possible destiny coexists without mutual exclusion. In artistic creation, the "not yet" is no lack, but absolute fullness. It is the state encompassing all futures that material concretization will inevitably exclude. Before choice, the work is everything. After, it is one thing alone. To draw back the curtain does not reveal. It destroys. Physical collapse compresses the multiple into one outcome. In art, it reduces infinite potential to a determined object. The work halts deliberately here. Electing the superposed state as the eternal condition of the possible. Because in physics, observation is a neutral act. In human experience, it is not. One who approaches a system charged with tension recognizes it. Knows that intervening clarifies not only what appears, but irreversibly annihilates all that, by appearing, would vanish forever. One can contemplate that tension and choose not to break it. Not from impotence, but to safeguard the infinite that distance still shelters. In quantum mechanics, seeing equals defining. In life, one can look without deciding. The curtain remains closed because lifting it is irreversible. Potential preserves totality. The accomplished reveals only a part. The "not yet" is the sole state that knows no end: as long as closed, nothing extinguishes. Lifting the curtain generates no knowledge. It generates the end of possibilities.
