Conceptual shifts and defunctionalizations (Installations - Paintings)

Conceptual shifts. Universal gravity forces humans to encode natural elements, language and thought in relation to their center of gravity. If man were to undergo a 180 ° rotation, his perception of things would be changed and would have a misleading impact on him. Therefore, a hypothetical spectator, faced with an object or an inverted natural element, unable to free himself from a conventional reading, would be forced to reposition the object with his mind (even tilting his head) according to the setting of his own center of gravity. The processing of the new unnatural visual data forces the viewer to give up the new point of view and the new form, or to accept them passively. In both cases there is a distortion of perception, a short circuit that generates disorientation. Losing its functional and aesthetic power, the overturned object becomes something "other" and has no definition.

Defunctionalizations. An idea born in 1985 with experimental prototypes. The concept of “Meaning” as a coding term and common reference is studied in depth. The meaning depends solely on the purpose. The meaning of a functioning object will not be the same as that of an object that is intentionally broken and deprived of its function. Breaking the object automatically deletes its meaning. The object in its original form is defined as "A-intact" with its meaning "B-coherent". The broken object becomes "A-mutated" while "B-coherent", the original meaning, is canceled. The object separated from its function and its meaning takes on a new morphology and a new ontological determination. Its new aesthetic becomes its new meaning and its new function. And it can be called "C-native". The result is an aesthetic and conceptual distortion, caused by the morphological memory of the object in its original "A-intact" state. In that, despite the evident new meaning and function, the mind continues to recognize the previous morphology, due to the mnemonic information connected to its "former" meaning.
